Emmy The Great

One of my musical discoveries this year has been British folk singer Emmy the Great. She hasn't released an album as of yet but she's got a fair amount of fans including Sasha Frere Jones, music critic from the New Yorker and has recently played SXSW.

I highly recommend her for fans of Kimya Dawson and just more generally for fans of lyrical music. She also does a pretty good cover version of 'Where Is My Mind?'

Along with No Age, I have a feeling she'll be much more well known by the end of the year

Red Ken for NSW Prem

In light of what's been happening at the NSW ALP Conference and the London Mayoral elections I thought I would create the Ken Livingstone for NSW Premier group on Facebook.

We can always dream.

UPDATE: The vote on electricity privatisation at NSW Conference is 702 against to 107 for. Now to wait and see what Iemma and the NSW Government will do.

UPDATE #2: It looks like Iemma is going to try to push ahead with privatisation. There's no way this is going to end pleasantly and there will be many repercussions, as well as a precedent for ignoring Labor Conference if they do it. They might as well drop the binding 'pledge' if nothing happens to Iemma and Costa.

The Most Ridiculous 2020 Submission

Just looking through the online submissions for Australia 2020, there are a fair few submissions with questionable if not insane ideas (and attempts to sell a products) but out of all that I've read this just takes the cake.

Housewarming Playlist

It's been a fairly relaxing ANZAC Day Long Weekend. I've needed one after having a busy few weekends where I haven't been able to catch up on rest.

I had contemplating going to the dawn service in Canberra but that didn't happen. However, I did go to a local social club to witness Two Up being played. The best way to describe it all was the atmosphere of a football match meets something like the floor of a stock exchange.

I also finally had my belated housewarming (belated since I moved in my place in early February). It was a bit more of an intimate affair since a fair few people headed home for the long weekend but I prefer it that way (and I'm not sure that 50 people would have been able to fit into the apartment)

Anyway the playlist for the night (in order) was:

First Splendour In The Grass Lineup Announcement 2008

After much waiting and speculation, Splendour announced its first lineup this morning. A few bands weren't surprises, mainly Devo as headliners. Rumours of Band of Horses and Vampire Weekend had also been floating around before but no Verve or My Bloody Valentine unfortunately.

Out of the lineup there are a few bands I'd see at sideshows but it looks like Splendour won't be returning to the lineups that made me want to go every year when I was a teenager. A bit of a shame. At the moment I'm more wishing that I could go to this.

Anyway, the bands in Splendour In The Grass' first announcement are:

Devo
The Music
Wolfmother
Sigur Ros
The Living End
The Presets
Tricky
Vampire Weekend
Ben Lee
Cold War Kids
The Fratellis
The Wombats
Pnau
Laura Marling
The Vines
The Grates
Operator Please
Band of Horses
Van She
The Panics
Gyroscope
MSTRKRFT
Lightspeed Champion
The Brown Birds from Windy Hill
Scribe
The Gin Club
